The Water-Sewer Department is responsible for ensuring that the water coming into the City is safe to drink and use in homes and businesses. Avon Lake Regional Water is the primary source of water for Sheffield Lake while Lorain provides a smaller amount. The department also monitors sewage emanating from homes and businesses as it moves through the city’s sewer system for processing in Lorain.
Staff read meters, and repair water lines, meters and hydrants. They also provide residential and commercial water taps, manage the water tower and protect our residents’ overall water quality.
They monitor sewage collection and flow, repair and maintain sewer lines, monitor and maintain lift stations, and facilitate municipal sewage removal.

An annual backflow inspection is required of homeowners or businesses with automated sprinkler systems and backflow devices. The inspection ensures that water from private plumbing systems does not backflow into the public water system.
Reports must be filed annually with the Sheffield Lake Water Department and be signed by a registered, licensed Backflow Inspector. For information, please call Tom Erwin, Sheffield Lake Water Department at (440) 949-6259.
